Chicago Eye SurgeryAstigmatism -astigmatism occurs when light rays are focused at more than one point on the retina.

Cataract -a clouding of the eye's natural lens that occurs with age.

Cornea - the clear part of the eye covering the iris and pupil that allows light to pass into the eye, creating vision.

Crystalens - intraocular lens that replaces the eye's natural lens and mimics the action of the eye's accommodation ability (ability to focus seamlessly between near and far distances).

Hyperopia - Hyperopia, or farsightedness occurs when light rays are not bent enough to focus on the retina.

Intacs - Designed to minimize the effects of Keratoconus on vision, Intacs grant patients the ability to achieve improved functional vision with contact lenses or glasses and in some cases without them.

Intralase - a computer-guided laser used to create the corneal flap during the first step of LASIK. After the flap is created, excimer laser treatment is applied to reshape the cornea.

Iris Registration - a computer-guided laser used to create the corneal flap during the first step of LASIK. After the flap is created, excimer laser treatment is applied to reshape the cornea.

Keratoconus - Eye disease that gradually thins and misshapes the cornea.

LASIK - LASIK, or Laser in-Situ Keratomileusis, uses laser energy to reshape the cornea to correct myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism

Lens - a transparent, biconvex intraocular tissue that helps bring rays of light to a focus on the retina.

Myopia - Myopia, or nearsightedness occurs when light rays are focused in front of the retina instead of directly on the retina.

Multifocal lens - new type of lens implanted during cataract surgeries which allows the patient to view near and far distances.

Presbyopia - Eye condition that causes near vision to fade with age.

PRK - Photo-Refractive Keratotomy. PRK uses a focused excimer laser light applied to the cornea to correct a refractive error. Unlike LASIK, the surgeon does not create a corneal flap. Instead, the surgeon removes the epithelium, or top layer of corneal cells and applies the laser with the help of a high-tech computer program.

Retina - the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye that transmits visual impulses to the brain with the help of the optic nerve.

VISX Star 4 -this precise excimer laser allows for incredibly .accurate LASIK results and better vision than previous lasers

Wavefront - a system that uses light rays to gather a patient's unique eye information in order to customize LASIK laser treatment.
